An external hard drive, also known as a portable hard drive, is very useful. Many people use these drives to store important information, or free up space on their main computer hdd. These drives are used to transfer large amounts of data between locations, store music, or movie files. This frees up space on your main computer.
When selecting a hard disc drive you should look for a few main things. First would be the capacity the HDD holds. Secondly you want to look for spindle speed. Third would be the interface or how the external hard drive connects to your computer.
Choosing a portable hard drive is not to technical. First determine what type of capacity you would need to hold your files. External hard drives come in many different sizes ranging from 60GB all the way to 4TB. For most main purposes like backing up your home computer or storing music and video files the range from 160GB to 1TB would be sufficient.
Second you want to look at the spindle speed. Usually the higher the spindle speed is the better the transfer rate is for the data. You may also look at cache and bandwidth, which you can also say the higher those numbers are the better.
The last thing you want to look at is how it connects to your computer. This can be either USB or fire wire. Like I stated Earlier many of the newer models of external/portable hard drives use USB to both power the unit and transfer data.
